Nick Murphy is the Australian musician and producer best known under his stage name Chet Faker. Born in Melbourne, Murphy began releasing music under the name Chet Faker in the early 2010s, choosing the alias as a reference to jazz musician Chet Baker.
His early releases quickly found an international audience. A cover of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” became one of his first breakout tracks, followed by the release of his debut album, Built on Glass, in 2014. The album reached number one in Australia and established Chet Faker well beyond the independent music scene.
In 2016, Murphy stepped away from the Chet Faker name and began releasing music under his own name, giving himself more freedom to explore a different direction. He returned to Chet Faker in 2020, and since then the two names have continued to exist alongside each other, reflecting different sides of his musical work.
His latest Chet Faker album, A Love for Strangers, was released in February 2026. The record follows Hotel Surrender and marks another chapter in a career that has continued to evolve across both Chet Faker and Nick Murphy.
